Nothing can be more exciting than...

Paranormal and Fantasy Romance and even non-romantic Paranormal and Fantasy fiction have been my mainstays for most my life - both reading and writing.

Aside from venturing from time to time into Historical Fiction (if it's got a Tudor, a Yorkist, or a Plantagenet all the better), I live and breathe paranormal and fantasy fiction.

But I am delighted to announce I've found a new GENRE!!! And I'm in love! You know the feeling, right?

Stay up all night reading until your eyes blur. Dream of the story while you sleep (nap) or daydream because the story has taken up residence in you brain 24/7. Wondering how you drove to work and don't remember the drive because you were anxiously playing the possible scenarios in your head for what the story you're reading will reveal next. Annoyed when others interrupt your reading or your daydreaming of the story.

That's love, right?

Well, that's exactly how I feel discovering this new-to-me genre. Now, to be honest, there's still some fantasy going on with these stories, but lots more mystery, intrigue, and suspense.

So, what is this amazing new genre I've discovered and now immersed myself into, you ask...

Gaslamp fantasy, also called gaslight fantasy, although I have not determined if there's any substantive difference in the two phrases.

According to TV Tropes (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GaslampFantasy)

Gaslamp, or gaslight, fantasy is "Steampunk's more magically-inclined cousin." It's has fantasy elements galore but also mystery, suspense, and historical fiction.

Fantasy - Check

Mystery - Check

Historical - Check

Romance - Mostly Check (haven't read on yet that didn't have it)

How did I come across this genre and why haven't I discovered it before now?

For the first question - I had the absolute privilege of editing for a wonderful author friend of mine who is diving into writing in the genre now. I don't want to give too much away. She's already written three books in the series but hasn't published yet, with more ideas for more books in the series. When she's ready to announce her new series, I will be the first to promote the books. I just don't want to put the cart in front of the horse, just yet.

So now I'm looking for more clients in this genre. If you're a gaslamp or steampunk author looking for an editor, give me a shout (reply to this email).

For the second question - When I like a particular genre or particular trope, I will read, read, and read some more until I'm satiated, which takes a lot. About twice a year, I break ranks from paranormal and fantasy to dive into historical fiction then go right back. Now I can get it all with gaslamp fantasy!

A few gaslamp fiction writers you can check out while waiting on my author friend to release her series...

CJ Archer

Byrd Nash

LJ Andrews

V.E. Schwab

Morgan Stang

There are many more. I'm just getting started.

WHAT IS A NEW-TO-YOU-GENRE YOU JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF?
