Advice on the Topic of Death: College Personal Statement

image

In a previous video, I spoke in brief about how the 5 D's (Death, Divorce, Depression, Drugs, Disease) might not be the best suited topic for a college personal statement - as these subjects often tend to be heavy and grim - and perhaps are not the best foot to lead with when trying to make a favorable first impression with admissions officers.

But a very nice mother reached out to me and spoke about how her son wants to write about the passing of his twin sister, as this truly was the one singular event in his life that shaped his character and his desired career path.

There are no hard or fixed rules - and the 5 D's certainly aren't taboo topics - but if one chooses to go this route, they need to tread with a certain degree of grace, composure, and maturity.

So, that's what we discuss in today's video.

We'll take a look at a student exemplar of an applicant that wanted to talk about how transformative her mom's passing was on shaping her character and sense of self.

We'll go over some basic tips and points to consider ... and in the end ... should you or your student decide to go this route ... they can do so with poetic grace and integrity.
