A little known fact about Bob Ross is that he championed the use of heuristics as a vital learning tool in the arts.
While he employed the wet-on-wet technique every single time he approached a natural landscape, my students approach each FRQ on the AP Literature exam with the inverted thesis heuristic (to construct the introductory paragraph) and the syllogistic method (for the bodies).
In today's video, you'll see the writing samples of three rookie teachers who are trying to wrap their heads around how best to teach the compositional aspects of the course.
So, like Bob Ross, they get to the proverbial easel and canvas, and "paint" countless exemplars for you and your students.
By video's end, not only should you see some interesting ways to approach these FRQs, but hopefully the process of constructing these essays should be nicely demystified for you and your students.
In this particular writing workshop, we unpack the Cusk FRQ2 from the 2025 exam.
Good writing = good thinking.
And all these teachers are doing is explicitly teaching the patterns that are ingrained in the act of good writing.
