David Sedaris "On Irritating Word Choices"

image

To give students ample opportunity to experiment with their voice, I often assign them a writing guru to apprentice with.

In today's writing workshop video, I have students teaming up with David Sedaris to hone their writing chops.

Recently, Sedaris delivered a wonderful monologue on CBS Sunday Morning entitled "On Irritating Word Choices."

Emulating an expert is a great way to learn a craft ... so in this assignment students follow Sedaris' lead while crafting an original monologue that focuses on three words/idioms/expressions that drive them nuts.

Ideally, I want students to teeter-totter their Tier II Level Diction with a tad bit of colloquial/vernacular to develop the spunkiness and poppy pizazz of the likes of Sedaris.

Per usual, I "Bob Ross" an example, which you can download directly in the YouTube video description.

Practicing voice outside the perimeters of an essay makes great sense.

Enjoy this one and do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need anything.

Happy teaching and happy writing!
