Traditional grading methods are for the BIRDS for so many reasons!
First, no matter how many comments we manage to squeeze into the margins of a student draft, our feedback is pretty much futile – all that red ink does very little to help the student grow and mature as a writer.
Second, traditional grading methods bind ELA teachers to compulsory unpaid overtime that in turn robs us of many a weekend and an evening.
Third, 99% of the onus of responsibility is placed on the teacher’s shoulders. Think about it – above and beyond asking our students to read our feedback, which many of them do not even do, what are we tasking them to do?
In today’s video, I showcase one of my many alternatives to traditional grading.
It’s the Beach Rally Version.
This coming Saturday at 11 a.m. EST live in Zoom, the National Writing Project and I are hosting my Alternative Grading Methods 2-Hour Intensive.
No joke ... come with your dustiest stack of ungraded papers and witness for yourself how quickly we fly through them, but more importantly - sit back and watch your students absolutely flourish as writers.
NWP will be awarding a completion badge of two hours for those needing PD credit.
And for those wanting to take a deep dive into my alternative grading methods plus everything else that is encompassed with my templates, NWP is bundling my Teach It "Write" Self-Paced Course at a discounted price.
These alternative grading methods are transformational.
Hope to see you Saturday morning for some magic and wonder!
Happy teaching and happy writing!
