Will Smith's Oscar Speech

image

Only in the strange context of this academic year can a teacher garner a million lesson plan ideas from merely watching the Oscars.

Despite all the frustration and headache of pandemic teaching, you gotta admit that when life imitates life – our classrooms take on greater relevancy and meaning.

This week, with my AP Language sections and 11th Regents students, we took a deep dive into Will Smith’s Oscar speech and the events that transpired prior to the delivery of his remarks.

This is some loaded “stuff.”

I get that.

But there are so many teachable moments in all of this.

During our discussion, we honored the complexity of all the various implications and meanings.

It’s messy … but in my eyes, that’s what learning looks like.

So, what you’ll see in my latest writing workshop video is me “Bob Ross-ing” my instruction.

I walk teachers and students through the process of constructing the essay while incorporating my templates.

As always, if you’d like the PowerPoint featured in the video with my models and exemplars, just reach out – I’ll send it your way.

And on a final note, a lot of folks have asked if I’ll be running another Teach It “Write” 5-Week Mastermind.

As long as there is interest … I absolutely will.

I love running these.

A couple of teachers have already booked, and we decided to launch the next session beginning April 28th.
