Oftentimes, the content of our courses seem divorced from our student's lives.
This assignment hits home the following point: ELA instruction matters ... it matters tremendously.

Just for context, I turned this into a contest and awarded the 5 best inquires with a candy bar of their choosing (I used the five samples as exemplars for possible revision).
What's cool about assignments like this - above and beyond preparing students for the next phase of their life - it squelches the sentiment that instruction isn't relevant and tied to their life's course.
