In our efforts to create total package student writers …
We need to ask ourselves the following question:
Can VOICE even be taught?
I contend that it certainly can.
In today’s video, I showcase an exercise that features some of our favorite bedtime stories and the AP “Voice” Dream Team we assembled the other day.
At its core essence, this unit has students selecting a favorite children’s story while rewriting it from the narrative perspective of a Dream Team member.
As always, I “Bob Ross” a few models and exemplars in order to demystify the process.
I selected Where the Wild Things Are and reworked it from the perspective of Chris Stevens (Northern Exposure).
This exercise is one of many tricks I have up my sleeve in my Nuance Academy.
A total package student writer must be equipped with the keys to unlock their authentic voice.
As such, instruction has to go above and beyond the mere teachings of grammar, punctuation, and syntax … and trespass into explicit teachings of how to cultivate voice, rhythm, and flow.
Yeoman’s work for sure!! But that’s why we make the big bucks 😊!!
Reach out if you’d like access to the slides featured in the video for your own classroom use.
Happy teaching and happy writing!
