Death By Scrabble was the magic bullet I was looking for!
Like many of you, given the apathy and disengagement of pandemic teaching, no matter the text I assign – it’s typically met by a ton of resistance and a classroom of kids who simply will not read no matter what.
But this short story quickly became a favorite.
Everything from our Plato’s Play-Doh Discussion to our writing workshop restored my faith and optimism in what has otherwise been an academic year to forget.
I had a lot of requests to make a writing workshop video for this story, so this morning I sat down to make a recording.
Here’s the YouTube link:
Per usual, I walk teachers and students through the process of constructing the essay using my templates.
I “Bob Ross” from start to finish.
Subscribe to my YouTube channel if you haven’t already. I’ll be uploading a ton of content over the coming weeks.
And a lot of folks have inquired about my project with Timm Freitas.
In brief, the writing of the textbook is coming along.
The two of us always have a couple of irons in the fire, but our collaboration has been pushed to the forefront of our priorities.
At present, I am in the research gathering phase.
As such, I created a course that I’m calling the Teach It “Write” 5-Week Mastermind.
In brief, I’m looking to work with about a handful of super eager and ambitious teachers seeking to retool, revamp, and simply shake up the manner in which they teach composition.
For five consecutive Sundays, we will meet in Zoom for an hour and talk all things templates, alternative grading methods, and discussion modalities.
The kicker – participants head into their classrooms and fire away with the new approaches and strategies and report back.
If this sounds intriguing and up your alley, then please reach out and we can discuss things more specifically.

I’ll keep the videos coming, especially for short stories and poetry.
On deck, I have an AP review cram-session an May invariably approaches.
So stay tuned!
Happy teaching and happy writing!
