Learning how to wield the rhetorical appeals can be tricky for a lot of students, so I devised a very clever introductory exercise.
As a child of the 1980s, I often find myself nostalgically
recalling all the great cereals we used to have.
In this unit, students need to redesign one defunct brand while also rewriting the original jingle.
As always, I modeled how to do this with redesigns of OJ's and Kaboom - two of my all time favorite cereals from my youth.
Once the redesign and jingle are complete, students present their concept to the Board of Trustees to ensure that the product will fly off the shelves.
Ultimately, in their explanation, students need to articulate how they manipulate their ethos, pathos, and logos to lure their target audience.
Feel free to download everything that I created for this unit in the video description.
This is a ton of fun!
But more importantly ... it nicely enables students to grapple with difficult concepts in a very accessible and engaging way.
Happy teaching and happy writing!
