I’m a strange duck in the professional development arena in that I am not affiliated with the College Board.
In fact, apart from my publisher, my methods are not governed by any external body.
But to be honest, I think this is what separates my Masterclass from all the others.
I’ve written widely in a variety of publications about my templates and have even published a very successful textbook.
My background is in rhetoric and composition and I have three graduate degrees from Ivy League schools.
I have been honing and perfecting my templates over my twenty-year career and I have done hundreds of PD events whereby I have taught teachers my methods and unique approaches to the teaching of composition.
Yesterday, I had a Zoom call with Nicole Mendall, the ELA director for a Boston charter school and a teacher working from the insides of the College Board. In August, I will be training her department and aligning their curriculum.
Here’s what she said in terms of what separates my Masterclass from other forms of PD:
One thing that has driven me nuts over the past couple of years is just how ‘paint by the numbers’ the College Board has become. I went to an APSI last year with two of my newer teachers and was stunned at how formulaic the teaching of writing has become. It’s not a plug a number into the system kind of endeavor. Writing is a very organic art and I think that the AP has forgotten this. Your Masterclass and templates take a very different approach. Your methods are authentic. Your methods free up student voice and lend a certain degree of cogency to student writing that the College Board “rules for writing” do not have. Your techniques and methods are non-restrictive yet simple. Your kids, and the kids that are versed in your methods, do so well on the exams for a reason.
I couldn’t agree any more. My templates aren’t stiffling and they do not hamper or interfere with authenticity.
From July 12th – July 16th, I will be offering my Masterclass for five consecutive days working from 11 a.m. EST to noon followed by Q&A.
