Good morning!
A number of folks reached out to me based upon the previous two day’s emails concerning the Alternative Grading Methods Two-Hour Intensive on July 31st, so we held a Zoom last night with about fifteen teachers.
The main question was this … must templates be used in order to use alternative grading methods?
My answer – I think it’s hard not to … otherwise there’s no clear criteria for assessment.
If there is a way around using templates, I haven’t figured that out yet.
So, I asked the group for a play that we’ve all taught or are super familiar with.
We decided upon 12 Angry Men.
I’ve made another video for you demonstrating how the templates of the declarative and inverted thesis, as well as the syllogistic method, not only guarantee a cogent line of reasoning in student writing; but when templates are used, your grading time is decreased exponentially.
Check out the video and see for yourself how these templates can be used in your classroom.
Further, consider how these templates allow students to think on paper with deliberation and clarity.
And to boot, think about how your grading time is impacted.
Good writing = good thinking!
Sprinkle in the nuances of mechanics … and voila … you have yourself a classroom of some pretty solid writers.
So, here’s the writing workshop video for 12 Angry Men.
Many folks ask what the Masterclass Library entails. Well, it’s a collection of over 150 such videos just like this one with accompanying PowerPoints. There are videos for the 65 most commonly taught novels and plays in the American high school curriculum, plus a glut of writing workshops for the remaining expository modes.
Life made easy!
Enjoy the video lesson and let me know what you think, or reach out with any questions.
