Are you relevant?

I've been engrossed in watching this video by a Youtuber called Boyinaband that has been controversial when he posted it.

In this video, aptly titled "Don't Stay In School" he mentioned and I quote:

"I wasn’t taught how to get a job, but I can remember dissecting a frog.

I wasn’t taught how to pay tax, but I know loads about Shakespeare's classics!"

It hit a nerve BUT I admit that it sounds so true as well.

There’s too much focus on the classics. Why all the Shakespeare and Gatsby and Crucible? It’s not relevant to our student’s lives. In effect, we are deterring our students from being lifelong learners with a passion for reading.

Don't shoot the messenger... I am just stating facts.

But maybe there is more to be done. Maybe we can make things simpler and easier to understand such that writing essays would no longer sound like a chore but more of an enjoyable experience.
