What is essential?

How do you see your classroom? May it be virtual or face to face, how do you look at your classrooms?

I’ve always contended that my English classroom is a place that holds a certain deathless power.  

This is where we get to introduce to our students the value of dreaming big like George and Lennie's dream farm from "Of Mice and Men" or the destruction wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints thru the words of Shakespeare in Macbeth.

In our classrooms, we have the greatest opportunity to shape and help students define their lives.

My Masterclass taps into this power in a few ways.  First, it provides students with workable templates and heuristics that allow them to think on paper – a space that is sacred.  Second, because of my alternative grading methods, my Masterclass frees teachers up to focus on what is most essential – the lives of our students.
