What if we taught composition like Bob Ross teaches painting?
Two distinct traits become manifest in your classroom.
First, just like Bob Ross, you equip your students with highly effective and accessible heuristics (he always wielded the wet-on-wet technique whenever he painted a natural landscape ... my students, regardless of the expository mode, bust out the declarative/inverted thesis heuristic - and they proceed syllogistically as they move through the body paragraphs).
Second, the classroom teacher positions themself as the expert writer in the classroom and "paints" with and for their students.
Not only does this totally demystify the writing process for your students, but it enables them to flourish so that they can truly grow and mature as writers.
As promised, over the next few weeks, I am going to "paint" my way through every FRQ from the present moment all the way back to 2015 for both AP Lit. and AP Lang. to illustrate that, with my heuristics, students can take a uniform approach each time they tackle any of these expository modes.
For today's student-facing writing workshop videos, I round out 2023.
Please subscribe to my new YouTube channel (Kristian Kuhn ... The "Bob Ross" of Composition) and spread the good word far and wide.
By the end of next week, I will have a complete video series for 2022 & 2021 (both exams).
Happy teaching and happy writing!
