The Vocabulary Void

image

At the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon bemoaning about the way things have changed over the years, let me just say this – there is a sizeable vocabulary void in our student’s lives.

I’ve been in the classroom for over twenty years, and the void is growing and growing and growing.

The teenage lexicon has shrunk … or has it?

So, what is to be done?

In my FB group – Teachers Making Better Writers – we are going to launch a summer webinar series whereby we tackle this question and collectively pose solutions.

Many folks are familiar with how I structure my Word Study Academy over the course of the academic year – and today’s video gives a quick glimpse of one small activity that has made a world of difference.

I’m looking to share the stage in these webinars, so if you have a really good way to teach vocabulary – please reach out.

I’ll take the lead and demonstrate some of my gamification models and the such.

Here’s the link to today’s video:

And just as a quick update … I have posted writing workshop videos from this past year’s AP Lit. and Lang. exams to my YouTube channel.

Feel free to reach out if you'd like any of the materials featured in those workshops.

Happy teaching and happy writing!!
