One of my favorite things to do with my children is go exploring in Spring. Over the years, we've had plenty of adventures that left the hairs on the backs of our necks raised. If you're ever in the area, Fossil & Prairie Park near Rockford, Iowa, ticks all the boxes while keeping you and your family relatively safe.

When you first enter the park, you're greeted by two old clay brick furnaces. Walk through the gap between them to the digging site where you'll literally find history at your finger tips. You can find fossils of all kinds among the mounds of rocky sediment.

A word of warning: Aim for a warm day without much wind, or the trip might turn out shorter than you planned.
