What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is restricting the timing of food intake to certain hours of the day (typically within an 8- to 12-hour time window that begins with the first food or non-water drink). This allows your body to digest and cleanse itself. One of the most intensive things the body does each day is digest your food! So it needs a rest, just like your physical body and mind need a rest each day to rejuvenate and come back to balance.

Fasting is also an ancient tradition, long believed to be vital to humans’ physical and spiritual health. Practiced for millennia by various cultures and religious groups, fasting is now widely appreciated for its beneficial effects on metabolism, health span, and overall well-being.

Why Try Intermittent Fasting?

There are many benefits to Intermittent Fasting. Here's the skinny on a few of them:

1. Easy implementation

Especially during the holidays, it may be hard to give up certain foods or restrict yourself to healthy foods only. Instead, if you're choosing when you eat (and when you don't!), you're less likely to feel deprived and have cravings.

2. Weight Loss

When we focus on intermittent fasting for health, for longevity, for digestive healing, for the soul and for mental health, weight loss becomes a natural result of the higher purpose of our goals.

3. Gain Muscle Mass

You will be eating the same calories and the same protein as before, you are just changing the timing of nutrient delivery. By giving rest to your digestive tract, you are enabling your body to re-purpose the energy and put it towards muscle growth and repair.

How is Fasting a Sacred Mindfulness Practice?

When we fast, we seek higher thoughts to feed our souls, fuel our bodies, and heal our minds. We're not thinking about food during as much of the day so there's more time to focus on other things. Along with mindfulness there are more mindset and spiritual benefits you will encounter and strengthen while you fast, such as discipline, patience, clarity, and rest.
