Zambia & Malawi - the perfect combination
Oct 20, 2023 6:50 am
Hello
Kim and I travelled through Malawi and Zambia - a few years BC (Before Children) - and loved it. Onesmo, who was one of the safari guides working with us in what was the Selous Game Reserve, traveled down with us. Such great memories! From Dar es Salaam on the coast of Tanzania, we made our way east and south, ending up in Zimbabwe, visiting family and National Parks, then made the long and fascinating drive back, sadly bypassing Malawi this time in our bid to get back to work on time.
The itinerary we have put together here is a lot more luxurious and no long drives between countries. It incorporates an ideal blend, with magnificent wildlife at cherished bush destinations in Zambia and Malawi, culminating in a tranquil retreat at a luxurious 5-star beach resort in Malawi.
Contrasting countries, friendly people, authentic bush camps with some of the best wildlife viewing and then a stunning, luxurious finish on an island in Lake Malawi.

Tena Tena Camp | South Luangwa National Park | Zambia
Tena Tena is in the South Luangwa National Park and claims to be the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa and it is certainly one of the best places to view leopard.
Nestled under a grove of Natal Mahogany trees, each room enjoys its own view onto a long stretch of the Luangwa river.
Four nights, fully inclusive, with game drives, walks, night drives, visits to the local village, wildlife education centre and tribal textile production - a lot to do!
Kuthengo Camp | Liwonde National Park | Malawi
The unspoiled Liwonde National Park promises an ultimate retreat where you can experience the many activities on offer with complete privacy; from day and night game drives and walking safaris to tranquil boat cruises along the grand Shire River, there is something for everyone.
Located on a large open plain stretching towards the Shire River in Liwonde National Park, you will find Kuthengo Camp nestled among Fever trees and Baobabs. With resident fish eagles nesting in these Baobabs, you will be woken to ‘Africa’s voice’ calling as you rise in this wild and natural paradise. The four spacious and modern safari tents are all en-suite, each with a bathtub and an outdoor shower. Cool off in the plunge pool in the hotter months and enjoy the view from there.
Kaya Mawa | Likoma Island | Malawi
On the white sandy beaches of Likoma Island in Lake Malawi, sits Kaya Mawa, a boutique lodge that welcomes everyone for an indulgently carefree getaway.
Meaning ‘maybe tomorrow’ in Chichewa/Nyanja, the ethos of Kaya Mawa is in its name. Relaxed lakeside living is woven into the style, luxury and comfort of its Houses and Rooms. Dinner by starlight, massage therapy at the spa, and snorkelling in turquoise waters – it’s just another blissful day at Kaya Mawa.
Built by local hands and as Malawi’s first resort run solely on renewable-energy, Kaya Mawa is firmly grounded in sustainability, community empowerment and ethical trade.
Lake Malawi is renowned for its crystal clear waters, as well as its beautiful, diverse and unique Cichlid fish.

Following a lot of interest in the last cruise I mentioned, there is a similar cruise, also by Oceania, which is shorter and departing in 2025, on the Insignia, the "Intriguing Indian Ocean" 33 nights from Cape Town to Singapore, from AU$16,560 per person sharing.

Did you know:
More than a thousand species of African cichlid live in Lake Malawi, and of these, several hundred are endemic. Between 560 and 580 kilometers long and about 75 kilometers wide at its widest point, Lake Malawi is one of the largest in Africa, boasting a unique aquatic ecosystem that contributes to such a diverse palette of fish life -
