Hidden India

Hello
Join Margaret on this unmissable 21-day odyssey through the enchanting landscapes of "Hidden India", where the ancient treasures and vibrant traditions of this mesmerizing country come alive.
This itinerary was set up by Dick Cijffers, purposefully visiting some out of the way destinations that are on very few itineraries and that he really loved:
- Visit the last remaining jungle royalty of India, the endangered Asiatic lions, amongst their abundant subjects of diverse wildlife in Gir National Park.
- Unlock the secrets of the picturesque Pondicherry, where the salty breeze is adorned with the fragrant blossoms of jasmine and exotic spices. This area gained its significance as "The French Riviera of the East" after the advent of French colonisation in India.
- Visit the 11th century Living Chola Temples, built by the kings of the time.
- Go on to stand in awe at the incredible architecture, beauty, handwork, extravagance and ultimately the love story of the Taj Mahal.
- Immerse yourself in the spiritual fervor of Varanasi, the Ganges River's sacred waters drawing pilgrims to bathe, from the tranquil early morning meditations or yoga, the solemn funeral rites and cremations alongside the river and watch the famous evening Aarti ceremony from a boat on the river.

Did you know:
Asian lions used to range from Turkey, across Asia, to eastern India, but the rise of firearms across the world meant that they were hunted to near-extinction for sport.
The confirmed record total length of a male Asiatic lion is 2.92 m (9 ft 7 in), including the tail. Emperor Jahangir allegedly speared a lion in the 1620s that measured 3.10 m (10 ft 2 in) and weighed about 300 kg.
