THROWBACK OF THE WEEK

Who was the better songwriter - Paul (the Beatle, not the Apostle) or John (the Beatle, not the Baptist)?

It's a classic debate, and still I thought I didn't have a dog in that hunt until I heard Arrow Through Me from the Wings album "Back To The Egg" I'm leaning hard toward Paul. 😬

There's an exceptionally good cover of this song by Scary Pockets, featuring Madison Cunningham that you should hear as well.

With groove clocking in at 💯...

melody at 💯 💯...

production & arrangement at 💯 💯 💯 ...

"Arrow Through Me" manages to appeal to both emotion and musical IQ with egual force...a rare feat and one that earns the song a spot on my personal "All Time Favorites" playlist.

WHAT I’M WORKING ON

Fun fact - apparently you can temporarily repair the felt pad that upon which an electric piano key rests with an every day piece of trident gum ...or at least that's what my last technician did! 🤦

For the gadgeteers and technologically curious...this is what the inside of an electric piano (my electric piano) looks like.

This Roland Fantom X88 has been my work horse (think Clydesdale because it seems to weigh about as much as one) for the last 20 years, and to say that she's long overdue for some TLC would be an extreme understatement.

🤞 Fingers crossed that I can manage to put it back together when I'm done.

YOU’VE GOTTA SEE THIS...

The best music documentary I've ever seen!

image

I once drove four hours to Knoxville, TN for a lesson with Jazz piano master Donald Brown who loaned me a DVD copy of Calle 54 on the condition that I mail it back to him when I was finished with it.

I was exposed to several astounding latin pianists, in genres that I knew almost nothing about. My favorite find from this exquisite documentary - Spanish Latin jazz, post bop and (most notably for me) flamenco pianist Chano Dominguez.

For those of you less familiar with Flamenco - it is traditionally a guitarists art form with flag-bearer's like Paco De Lucia in the spotlight, and before stumbling upon the music of Chano Dominguez via Calle 54 I often wondered what flamenco would sound like with the piano replacing the acoustic guitar.

Now I know...and it's absolute 🔥!

CHECK OUT THIS ALBUM BY ATLANTA'S OWN ANTHONY DAVID

image

It's one thing to cover a song, it's another thing to cover a song well.

And then, in a different category entirely a great contemporary artist - in this case Anthony David - pays homage to one of the all-time great artists,

Bill Withers.

His rendition of Withers' iconic song "Grandma's Hands" (among others) leaves no room for doubt regarding the depth of David's familiarity with the finer points of Wither's artistry.

The influence is plain to see (or to hear), and still David's timbre, tone and interpretation breathe something undeniably new into the soul-music standard that is "Grandma's Hands".

Hello Like Before is an album worth listening to from tip to stern...the way we used to do.
