“Waiting feels safe because the cost arrives later.”
— The Generalist’s Advantage
As I put the finishing touches on Hold the Horizon, releasing June 22, I keep returning to a pattern I have seen throughout my career.
Most leaders understand the risk of acting too quickly.
Far fewer understand the risk of waiting too long.
When uncertainty rises, the instinct is to gather more information. Another meeting. Another report. Another forecast.
Sometimes that’s exactly the right move.
Sometimes it’s simply a delay disguised as diligence.
While leaders wait, opportunities disappear. Competitors move. Teams lose momentum.
The question is not whether you have all the information.
You never will.
The question is whether you have enough information to move responsibly.
Every decision carries risk.
Including the decision to wait.
