September 2023
This month of September we're celebrating the birthday π of our beloved IKT ambassador, Miss Eli πΆ who turns two! Eli has been a shining star in our clinic, consistently impressing us with her work ethic, tail wagging, cuddling, and unparalleled quality of care. It's no wonder she's held the title of "Employee of the Month" for a record-breaking 12 months in a row! What a good girl.
September is also National Suicide Prevention Month: Itβs a time to remember those affected by suicide, to raise awareness, and to focus efforts on directing treatment to those who need it most. If you or someone you know is afflicted by suicidal thoughts, the 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources.

βοΈ Last week, a history unfolded as the California Senate signed Senator Scott Wiener's Senate Bill 58, marking a pivotal shift in drug policy. This groundbreaking legislation decriminalizes personal possession and use of certain naturally occurring psychedelics, such as psilocybin, DMT, and mescaline.
The bill not only grants personal freedom but also opens doors to responsible therapeutic use of these substances. With a 21-14 vote, SB 58 is now on its way to Governor Newsom's desk for the final review. If signed, the new law would come into effect on January 1, 2025.

π€ Has Psychedelic Healing Gone Too Far? In this 68-minute audio interview, Adam Aronovich, a PhD candidate in medical anthropology, joins Dr Lynn Marie Morski, host of the Psychedelic Medicine podcast, to discuss concerning practices which use psychedelics like ayahuasca to make people better. From making ceremonies too performative to an overreliance on psychedelics to show the "true" nature of reality, this is an interesting listen for anyone considering psychedelic-assisted therapy.
π Science In Action! The amount of research into ketamine and its ability to heal continues to grow. Recently, I read how ketamine may be used to help treat adolescents with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This contrasts with existing research showing that ketamine may increase intracranial pressure (ie, the pressure inside your skull). Our treatments are based on the most established findings so we do not expect changes to our protocol until we know more. With that said, it is exciting to watch science in action.
π¬ More Findings Support Injectable Ketamine: In other scientific news, there is new research about which is more effective: Esketamine (aka Spravato), a nasal spray medication which is approved by the FDA for Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) or injectable ketamine which is what we administer at IKT. I wrote about this earlier this year when a different study was completed indicating similar results. While Spravato may be a good choice for some, we will continue using Ketalar or its generic equivalents in our treatments.
π― A Powerful Story About Chronic Pain Relief. The folks over at Oprah Daily just published a firsthand account of how ketamine infusion therapy changed the life of someone suffering from severe debilitating pain. Treating conditions like this with ketamine may require higher doses over longer durations but the relief can be life-changing for some. We can never guarantee results for anyone but ketamine therapy to treat chronic pain may be a good option, especially if more traditional treatments have been tried without luck.
EVENT
We have last public event scheduled for the year at the SLO Farmer's Market scheduled from 6-9 pm downtown on October 12th. We've genuinely enjoyed engaging with the public, answering questions about ketamine therapy, raising awareness, and changing perceptions!
