I lived in Spain for a few months before my family could join me. Nothing out of the ordinary, just the time it took for my office to get their paperwork sorted out.


During that time, I lived right in a predominantly Caucasian area with loads of Spaniards and Europeans. Interestingly, most people didn't have conversations with me. Even the folks I lived with in my building didn't either.


All that changed when my family joined me. I guess seeing I was a family man eased any sense of caution they had approaching me. I became "safe".


People would stop to chat with my family and me. On one occasion, I even had an older couple buy treats for one of my children while we were waiting at a panaderia.


The reality in some situations when we think people are being unfriendly is that they are only just trying to feel safe. Yes, some take it to the extreme, but let's not make our lives about working through exceptional circumstances. The usual situation is that people will warm up to you once they are sure you are "safe".


The issue is that we may not know what could do the trick for them sometimes. What works for some people may not work for others.
