Faith & Life Lessons - January 21, 2024

image

Welcome to the January 21st edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week

This week, I had to call in the cavalry.

I am already facing challenges to the big goals I have for the year.

Between Monday night and Tuesday evening, I felt the pressure.

And the ripple of emotions that comes with carrying something bigger than I had ever carried.

On Tuesday morning, on my way back from the school run, I sent a message to my business coach.

Just this “Please if you have a moment today, I'd appreciate a bit of your time.

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed”

17 minutes later, he responded, “May I call now?”

The few minutes of conversation were what I needed.

It wasn’t fluff - he was well aware of the goals I had set and how they were important to me.

He encouraged me and reminded me of the necessity of why I needed to achieve these goals.

Not just for myself.

For my family.

For the people that will become better because I become better.

For the value I will bring to the world.

And how I will leave the world better.

It’s back to game time.

Things I Learnt

1 - Sometimes by Step: I had my first call for the year with my spiritual director on Friday. During the call, we reviewed some of the things I had told him in December and expected to happen in January.

But January has not evolved the way I expected.

I didn’t get all I expected but I got the best of what I could have hoped for in one of the most important things to me.

And I had to adapt to every day as unexpected things showed up every day.

He reminded me of the song by Rich Mullins - Sometimes by Step. It’s the spirit of the season for me.

It’s how I have to live for now and for the rest of the year.

You can listen to the song lyric video here - Sometimes By Step ~ Rich Mullins

Chorus

O God, You are my God

And I will ever praise You

O God, You are my God

And I will ever praise You

And I will seek You in the morning

And I will learn to walk in Your ways

And step by step You'll lead me

And I will follow You all of my days

2 - Keep Giving Value to Your Network: I had to reach out to a couple of people within my network to help me out with a major goal for the year.

I realised something.

The reason why they responded quickly was because I had been giving them value in the past.

A clear case of “people will feel invested in your progress if they know you are also invested in their progress.”

That is one of the reasons I am always committed to giving as much value as I can to network before I ask for value.

Yes, it’s a discipline.

It is also a lifestyle that I have embraced.

Postscript

May you grow your network by the generosity of value you keep giving to people within it. Amen.
