Faith & Life Lessons - March 6, 2022

image

Welcome to the March 6th edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week

Apologies for sending this later than usual.

I have not been in the best of shape throughout the week.

It started the previous weekend.

Tiredness, headaches but no fever.

By Tuesday morning, I got myself to the hospital. Many conversations and a COVID test later, a diagnosis was given.

You are fighting a virus but not COVID.

I'm still fighting the virus.

This reminds me of something Graham Cooke said "I am not a sick person trying to get well. I am a whole person fighting sickness."

And that is what I am still doing.

Fighting and winning.

Even when I feel weak.

My conversation will always be this.

I believe I will win my battle in the coming week.

Things I Learnt

1- Don't Become an Unbeliever: In one of the groups I am on, someone posted a request for additional information on something the government was doing.

Nothing wrong with that.

The only problem is that the request was laced with so much cynicism that it was clear that this person had lost his or her belief in the goodness of the country.

One thing we forget is that while the leadership of a country may change now and again, the destiny of the nation remains a story that is created by the tapestry of convictions by different generations of its citizens.

No matter how bad a country is, I refuse to speak evil over it.

Am I oblivious to bad leadership?

Nope.

I just refuse to let the actions of a few become the story I say about collective identity.

It’s my Christian duty because death and life are in the power of my tongue.

I chose to continue to speak life.

No matter what.

2- Revisiting the Slow: I was asked to speak by someone who played the role of my spiritual director for a season during the week.

He was commissioning another group of men after spending 1 year with him.

And we wanted some of us who had passed through earlier to speak with the new guys on the impact our time had in preparing us for the future we are now in.

One of the things that marked my time with him, especially during our one-on-one was the unrushed rhythms he created.

I have been used to having something to say during pregnant pauses. He taught me how to be quiet and not fill the pauses with conversations.

It was uncomfortable initially but I got used to it and found it refreshing to my soul.

Becoming at peace with pauses and not saying anything.

A few of the current guys smiled when I said that.

I guess I was not the only person who struggled with it.

And it's a gift that has helped me.

Postscript

May God keep you all you do and make you stronger than what you face. Amen
