Welcome to the June 30th edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My First Half Year.

I am grateful.

This is the overall story of the first half of 2024 for me.

I transitioned to a new country and I published a book.

Someone asked me how long it took me to write the book.

Well, it took shorter than they expected.

I am grateful to God for that.

It is also a good book.

That’s the general feedback from everyone that has reviewed it.

I am grateful.

God is meeting every need that has come our way.

I am grateful.

I am making a difference in my new role at work.

I am grateful.

Some new relationships have come into my world which have helped me move forward.

I am grateful.

I ended this first half-year grateful.

I didn’t achieve all my goals but am grateful for the ones I hit.

Why?

The ones I hit are signs of progress.

The ones I didn’t hit prove that I have room for more growth.

I am grateful.

Things I Learnt

1 - The Age of Convenience: While listening to a podcast episode by Maya Gudka, I realised something interesting about myself.

OK, it is nothing new but she gave me a word for it.

According to her, we spend based on our money dials. She picked this up from reading Ramit Sethi's “Money Dials”.

The first of the dials is “Convenience”. According to Ramit, if this is your core dial, you spend money on things that make your life more convenient.

I turned this thing on its head.

I don’t just spend for convenience - I create a space around myself to make it easier for me to focus and do the things most important to me.

This is one of the reasons why I don’t compete with the people who work for me or do anything for me.

If they can do it 70% as well as I can, I let them do it and let time aided with consistent practice help them raise their game.

I use my money to buy my free time to do the things that matter to me.

And I love living life like this.

Why?

Because I am uniquely equipped to do some things and serve people in a way that nobody else can.

And so I create convenience around me to do that.

Thanks, Ramit & Maya for giving a name to something I live second to nature.

2 -The Fight Not to Fight: I paid for a car a few weeks ago.

After making the payment, the company said they sold out on the ones they had in store and they have inventory at the ports just waiting to clear. And the wait continues…going a month now.

In the intervening period, I have followed up with calls.

During the last call on Friday, the boss man was very apologetic. He said appreciated how patient I have been and not resorted to shouting or doing the “angry customer” routine.

Interesting, I just thought I was doing the normal thing.

Once upon a time, I called him only to find out he was at the hospital with his daughters who had fallen sick.

The next two follow-up calls I made, I would start by asking how his daughters were and if they had returned to school.

It’s not everything that has to go into a fight mode.

Even when we have the right to fight.

We have to fight ourselves not to fight when we don’t need to fight.

Postscript

May you live with the wisdom to know when you have to walk away from a fight. Amen
