Faith & Life Lessons - April 23, 2023

Welcome to the April 23rd edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

Like this?

Pay it forward by sharing it with someone that could benefit from it. They will thank you for it.

The Story of My Week

One of the things I tell people who make relocation decisions is to quickly have a support system around them.

If you have a family, it becomes a bigger priority.

This week, my family had kids from another family over.

The mother was having a baby and like us they were also foreigners.

They couldn’t have any family member travel to be with them to help out.

So, the husband had to stay at the hospital for the delivery.

We had the kids over without a fuss.

Why? Because we know that only the people around them can be the family they need.

We have had people be that to us. We understand how it can be a relief to the family.

Having a family you can trust your kids with, knowing that you have similar values, doesn’t happen by chance.

As families, we visited each other and had dinner at each other's place.

Both sets of kids had become comfortable with both sets of parents.

It’s a planned activity as a family living in a foreign country.

It’s not all peaches and cream but we love the privilege to serve another family.

And having our family rituals made it easier to plug them into how we do things.

Fortunately, the school runs in the same school for both sets of kids.

And our kids also get in-house play date mates.😜

A win for everyone.

Things I Learnt

1-No Excuses, Just Results: During the week, I had to report to one of my company’s overseeing committees on the activities of the businesses I lead.

The last quarter had been challenging and we faced a couple of external issues that impacted our performance.

Most of the members of the committee were aware beforehand of these issues.

One of them still decided to twist the knife. You would almost think that sitting and watching the cars go by was all I did at work.

After he finished, I didn’t argue with him or give reasons why things are as they are.

Rather, I told him I agreed that no matter the level of effort that I had put into the business, results were the only thing that counted.

And delivering results remained the focus of what we as a business would continue to focus on.

It changed the tone of the conversation. He was more open to the rest of everything I said during the meeting.

Simply because I focused my attention on the only thing that mattered.

Results.

Everything else is prose along the way.

2-A League of Your Own: A while back I started a mastermind.

I identified 5 other guys with whom I believed we could leverage and learn from each other.

We have met monthly over the years.

One thing I noticed is the organic way everyone pitches in to help.

We had a meeting today.

During our updates, one of us said he was taking up a senior role in a new company and he wanted to start getting wins under his belt as soon as possible. Someone in the group said his firm had done some strategy consulting for the company and he could share the report with him so he could have a quick read of the company.

This sort of organic assistance has happened so many times and it gladdens my heart to see that value is been exchanged within the group.

The six of us represent a league of brothers helping and supporting each other.

This is a league of our own.

Postscript

May you surround yourself with the right people who inspire you to aim for more in life. Amen
