The Biggest Problem with Events in 2026 Isn't Attendance
Jun 01, 2026 11:56 am
Hey ,
Have you noticed something strange? More people are creating content than ever before. More webinars are being hosted. More virtual events are happening. More AI tools are helping us create faster.
And yet... Getting people to show up, pay attention and engage feels harder than ever.
Last Friday, I hosted a discussion with a group of event professionals, marketers, consultants and business owners around one question:
What's one thing that used to work that just doesn't anymore?
The conversation was eye-opening.
While attendance rates, engagement challenges and algorithm changes all came up, we kept coming back to a bigger issue:
People are overwhelmed.
- They're overwhelmed by content.
- Overwhelmed by notifications.
- Overwhelmed by AI-generated information.
- Simply hosting an event is no longer enough.
What Audiences Want Now
Our group agreed that people attend events when 3 things are clear:
✔ The topic feels urgent.
✔ The host is trusted.
✔ The outcome is obvious.
In other words, "Join my webinar" isn't a compelling reason anymore.
People want to know:
"What problem will this help me solve?"
Bigger Isn't Better
One insight that sparked a lot of discussion:
A room with 12 ideal buyers can create more business value than 500 random registrants.
For years, many of us chased registration numbers.
Today, the most successful event leaders are focused on attracting the right people instead of the most people.
Quality is beating quantity.
Again.
The Future Isn't More Events
It's better ecosystems.
One of the strongest themes from the discussion was that successful organizations are no longer treating events as standalone experiences.
They're treating them as content engines and community builders.
A single conversation can become:
• LinkedIn posts
• Blog articles
• Newsletters
• Video clips
• AI-generated summaries
• Evergreen replay libraries
The live event is no longer the finish line.
It's the starting line.
Human Connection Is Becoming More Valuable
Ironically, as AI becomes more powerful, human connection becomes more important.
People still crave trusted relationships.
Peer-to-peer learning.
Meaningful conversations.
And communities where they feel seen and understood.
Technology can accelerate content creation.
It can't replace belonging.
A Question for You
If you're hosting webinars, virtual events, podcasts, livestreams or building a community:
What's one thing that used to work that no longer gets the same results?
And what are you doing differently because of it?
These are exactly the kinds of conversations we're having inside the Virtual Summiteers each week.
Every Friday, we gather with event professionals, marketers, business owners, consultants and community builders to discuss what's changing and what's actually working in the world of virtual events, content and audience growth.
If that sounds like your kind of conversation, we'd love to have you join us!
Because the future belongs to those who are willing to adapt before everyone else catches up.
To your continued growth,
