What claiming yourself actually looks like

Notice. Name. Keep. It's smaller and harder than a rebrand.

Hi friend,

Last time I asked you which parts of you were built to survive and which parts you chose.

I said we'd look at what claiming yourself actually looks like. So let's do that.

But first, a small confession that fits the topic.

This letter is a few days later than I planned. I had a flare-up.

There was a time I would have opened with an apology and a promise to do better. I'm not doing that. Not because I don't care about showing up for you, but because claiming yourself includes claiming the body you actually have, not the one your schedule wishes you had.

That is the first thing it looks like.

Claiming yourself is not a big announcement. It's not a rebrand. It's not walking away from everyone who ever got it wrong about you.

It's much smaller and much harder than that.

It looks like noticing.

Noticing the moment you say yes while your whole body is saying no. Noticing the version of yourself you become in certain rooms. Noticing whose voice you hear when you call yourself lazy.

It looks like naming.

Saying, that's not mine, that one was handed to me. Saying, this is how I actually work. Saying, this is what I need, out loud, to someone who can do something about it.

And it looks like keeping.

Because here's the part people skip.

Claiming yourself doesn't mean throwing out the self that got you here. That self was not a mistake. It learned to fit, to cope, to be useful, and it kept you safe.

You don't fire her. You thank her. Then you decide which parts you're keeping on purpose, and which ones you're finally allowed to put down.

Notice. Name. Keep.

That's it. That's the work.

It isn't dramatic, and it doesn't finish in a weekend. Some weeks it's one small noticing, and that counts.

So here's this week's quiet question.

What is one thing you've been carrying that was never yours to carry?

Just name it. You don't have to put it down yet.

In my next letter, we move to the second pillar. Message. Your voice.
