Work should be more than where you go to get paid
Howdy
Yesterday I asked: What do you want from work?
I'm hoping that by the end of this week, you will think about work a little differently.
Not simply as somewhere you go to earn a salary. Not simply as a list of tasks somebody pays you to complete.
And certainly not as a place where you spend decades becoming another cog in a very large wheel.
Work can be more than that.
It can be one of the places where you discover what you are capable of.
Where you develop mastery. Where you solve problems that matter. Where you serve people. Where you build relationships. Where you express your values.
And where you make a contribution that carries your fingerprints.
Of course, getting paid matters.
We all have bills. Families. Responsibilities. And there is nothing noble about pretending money doesn't matter.
But there comes a point in your career where money alone becomes an inadequate answer to the question, "Why am I doing this?"
Because there is a difference between having a job...
…and doing work that is helping you become more capable, more useful and more aligned with the person you want to become.
Meaningful work doesn't necessarily mean changing the world.
Sometimes it simply means knowing: Why does my work matter? Who benefits because I do it well? What am I becoming capable of because I am here?
And: Am I merely completing work, or am I increasingly shaping the work I do?
That last question matters.
Because the further you progress in your career, the more you should be developing the capability and agency to shape how you contribute.
So here's today's question: Are you simply earning from your work…or are you also becoming something because of it?
Keep winning at work and in life.
