I lost a referral lead (here's what I did next)

Hey there,
What happens when you lose a lead? Especially a referral?
It happens to the best of us - agencies, freelancers, consultants. You spend hours on discovery, build a solid proposal, and then... they go with someone cheaper on Upwork.
After that, it all feels wasted. I used to feel the same way.
Here's what changed.
A couple months ago, a referral came in. Enterprise company that helps businesses make better hiring decisions (that's all I can tell you).
They only wanted to target enterprise HR departments. On the discovery call, I suggested: "Why not go after hiring agencies instead?" (I've had great results with them in the past.) They'd have more frequent use of the service.
We got down to numbers.
My services were out of budget for them. So they ended up going with another agency from Upwork.
What did I do?
I could have:
- Said "thanks anyway" and moved on
- Felt bitter about the 3-4 hours I spent analyzing their business and making a proposal
Instead, I asked my team to whip up a list of their top competitors and sent them an email.
That's what you should do too.
Why this works
When you lose a deal, especially after doing deep discovery, you now have:
- A full understanding of that industry and pain point
- A proposal that's already 80% written and can be repurposed
- A list of their competitors who probably have the exact same problem.
Don't let that research go to waste.
Turn every lost deal into your next outbound campaign.
If you want help building systems like this - turning lost deals into opportunities, doing better discovery, creating offers people actually say yes to, and running multi-channel outreach that books calls - that's exactly what we'll do inside the 3-month Cold Outreach Mastery mentorship.
