Day 2: The subject lines getting 50% opens (and why that's terrible)
Feb 10, 2026 12:24 pm
Hey there,
Day 2 of Valentine's week. Let's talk about subject lines.
I was auditing a client's campaign last month. They were getting 50% open rates and thought they were crushing it.
Spoiler: 50% open rates are bad.
Here's what they were using:
" - consulting"
" - consulting"
" - professional firm"
"for at "
These scream marketing email. Prospects smell it instantly.
Here's what actually works:
Subject lines that look like they were sent internally or are completely personalized.
Personalized examples:
- "for w/ "
- "for in "
- "Cyprus, biohacks and getting infoproduct clients" (if you know their interests)
- "Question from " (if they have one)
Internal-style examples:
- " thoughts?"
- " -"
- "for from "
One-word subject lines that work:
- Intro
- Idea
- Relevant?
- Thoughts?
- deliverability
- spam?
- (Blank subject line)
It's ironic how "quick question" still works in 2026. But don't rely on it alone.
Here's the real secret: You need 5+ subject lines per campaign, split-tested.
Most people launch with one subject line and wonder why results tank after week 1. Your deliverability suffers, and you burn through your list.
Use spintax. Rotate subject lines. Test small batches of 500 leads before scaling.
But here's what nobody tells you:
Your first line matters more than your subject line.
You can have the perfect subject that gets opened, but if your first line is garbage, you're done. No reply. Straight to trash.
That's what we're covering tomorrow - how to write first lines that build trust instead of triggering delete reflexes.
