Feeling lucky?

Jun 12, 2026 7:01 am

Hi ,

In the presentation I gave this week: What a Traumatic Brain Injury Taught Me About Performance - I told the story of Bill Morgan.

In 1998, this Ozzy truck driver had an allergic reaction to his medication which caused his body to shut down.

He died for 14 minutes

He then went into a coma.

During this 12 day coma, the doctors suggested that his family turn his life support off, twice.

They refused.

And Bill came back to them, just like that.

And then his next year hit a home run of good fortune:

  1. He got engaged

  2. He got a new job

  3. When he bought a scratch card, he won a Toyota Corolla (worth about $25,000)!

He was having such a fortunate streak that the local news team came to do a story on him.

During this story, Bill was asked to buy another scratch card on camera - to re-enact winning the car.

Guess what?

He won quarter of a million dollars!

Filmed and recorded by the crew. (You can watch it with link below after reading this email).

This is a totally true story.

And just think how many version of Bill there are during a 2 year period.

Before 1998, he's a pretty normal truck driver. With no idea of the bad luck that awaits him. And the good fortune to follow that.

None of us know the next roll of the dice.

You could win a car, or be hit by one.

What we must remember, in the NOW, is how lucky we are to be born, in a safe, happy, developed country, on a beautiful planet, with rain and sun, snow and lightning, And at (indisputably) the best few decades of it's 4.5 billion years.

We might feel lucky, we might feel unlucky right this second.

But we're involved in choosing the narrative.

And we know not what comes next.

And just consider this quote:

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 13.0px 'Helvetica Neue'}

"If you only wished to be happy, this could be easily accomplished; but we wish to be happier than other people, and this is always difficult, for we believe others to be happier than they are." Montesquieu

Whatever problems you have: debt, grief, injury and illness, I'm sure you'd take them over anyone else's if you got the chance.

And if you don't think so, make sure to really ask that other person what they're dealing with.

So, just for this weekend, consider this life like a video game. You're the main, and only character.

Everyone else is there, but you can't select them on the loading screen.

You can do whatever you want, with whomever you want, whenever you want. And whilst you might not be objectively as lucky as Bill Morgan, you can still choose to feel luckier.

As long as you're playing the game, it's your game to play.

And I'm choosing to take 8 lads on an adventure to the Yorkshire 3 peaks.

HOW LUCKY.
