PIG KILLERS, RE-ANIMATORS, INDIE CINEMAS and HHF WINNERS
Hi ,
Here we are with our 2nd fun NEWSLETTER and I'm happy we've had so much positive feedback. So let's get on with the latest genre news...
PIG KILLER - STREAMING & BLU-RAYS
At last November's HOLLYWOOD HORRORFEST we hosted the World Charity Premiere of “PIG KILLER,” based on one of the world’s most prolific serial killers Robert ‘Willy’ Pickton. On hand were stars JAKE BUSEY (Stranger Things, Starship Troopers, The Frighteners) and BAI LING (The Crow, Red Corner, Crank: High Voltage), who both received well-earned lifetime achievement awards. Also present were Co-star LEW TEMPLE plus Writer/Director CHAD FERRIN (one of the most prolific genre directors out there), Prod/Actor ROBERT ‘Corpsy’ RHINE (see photo) and FX Guru and all round good guy JOE CASTRO.
In case any of you missed this amazing screening don't worry. This mind-blowing movie is available pretty much everywhere now for your streaming pleasure (just click on any of the links below):
And for those who love hard copies:
So let's support indie horror.
LA'S HIDDEN GEM - THE GARDENA CINEMA
Here's the first of what promises to be a series showcasing some of LA's hidden cultural and artistic gems. First up is the local and family-run GARDENA CINEMA. I've only heard great things about this 800 seat venue. It's the only traditional, single-screen, stand-alone independent movie theater in South Los Angeles.
Built in 1946, it’s been operated by the Kim family since 1976. Owner/operator JUDY KIM continues the family legacy with a wonderfully eclectic program of film screenings and events. And all at a theater that has such a warm and community-centric vibe about it. Plus they have lots of available parking- and in LA that’s a great thing!
We'll be posting more about this beautiful LA treasure, but in the meantime check out these cool upcoming events. Every single one not to be missed:
MY BLOODY VALENTINE (1981) (7:00pm) (Fri. 2/9)
WILD AT HEART (1990) (Wed. 2/14)
and
THE LOVE WITCH (2016) (Fri. 2/16)
So let’s support local cinemas. Check it out when you can, and say HOLLYWOOD HORRORFEST sent you!
MEETING OUR AWARD WINNERS
Several of last year’s HHF AWARD WINNERS were unable to attend the Awards Night. I have reached out to many and am in the process of presenting their awards in-person.
One such winner is RAHUL MENON, writer, director, editor, producer and an occasional actor. I sat down to chat with Rahul last week. He’s a talent who represents the rich diversity that makes the HHF community so exciting and vital. Originally from New Delhi, India, Rahul worked first as a Software Analyst, then Copy Supervisor in the world of advertising. But the film business was his true calling, and in 2018 he made the bold decision to move to the US. With a degree in M.S in Film Production from Southern Illinois University he shifted his base to Los Angeles. Here he has been diligently learning his craft, working as an Assistant Video Editor and Production Assistant in the industry. He graduated with his second master's in MFA in Television and Screenwriting from Stephens College in 2023.
Rahul (with co-director JAMIE GRIGSBY) won 2023’s Best Student Film Award, for the amazing DEAD AIR, a short film written, shot and edited in 48 hours. Congratulations again, and we hope to hear much more about you and your career in the future.
FUN AROUND TOWN
I just love Los Angeles. Where else can you go and see a 35mm screening of the ever outrageous and fun RE-ANIMATOR (Feb.2 at beautifully restored THE EGYPTIAN) with JEFFREY COMBS, BARBARA CRAMPTON, screenwriter DENNIS PAOLI and producer BRIAN YUZNA in-person one night, and then the next night see Academy Award Nominee ANDY GARCIA (THE GODFATHER: PART III, THE UNTOUCHABLES, THE MAN FROM ELYSIAN FIELDS, EXPEND4BLES) perform with THE CINESON ALL-STARS at the CATALINA JAZZ CLUB (another of LA's hidden gems).
Both events were incredible. So much to see and so much to do here.
AND FINALLY …
