IT'S ANIMATION WEEK!
Hi ,
Welcome to this year's special LOS ANGELES ANIMATION FESTIVAL NEWSLETTER. Yes, we're handing over the newsletter to LAAF 2025 - amazingly, the festival has been going since 2007! Next Saturday is the Opening Night Event of LAAF 2025, screening animation rarities, with special guests and presented by LA animators SCREEN NOVELTIES. And before that we're holding the last Indie Filmmakers Meetup of 2025 (also in conjunction with LAAF 2025).
And remember to click on our many 'links.' There's lots of fun attached!
So without further ado, read on…
Sat. Night OPENING EVENT!
The LAAF is in Hollywood once again this year, housed at the Eastwood Performing Art Center. Saturday night is a special night indeed. We're proud and excited to be hosting a fun and at times festive salute to the wonderful art of stop-motion animation.
AI is coming for us all, but on Saturday Dec. 6th we’ll revel in the low-fi, handmade world of stop motion animation. Clay, wood, sand, glitter— it all exists and it all can be manipulated one frame at a time, as our guests do on the daily. Screen Novelties will share some of their favorite stop motion rarities and oddities, along with clips of their own work. From the elegant designs of Jiri Trnka to the maniacal morphs of Bruce Bickford, they’ll explore the range and dynamism of their chosen technique.
Mark Caballero, Seamus Walsh, and Chris Finnegan make up Screen Novelties, a stop-motion studio based in Los Angeles’ Echo Park. The trio met in New York as animators on MTV’s cult clay series Celebrity Deathmatch. They helped launch Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken and Moral Orel, and have become the go-to stop motion team for all things SpongeBob, having made three holiday specials and countless bits and bobs for the series and movies. Their short films include Mysterious Mose, Monster Safari, and The Tortoise & the Hare, a collaboration with animation legend Ray Harryhausen. They’re currently finishing their Witchdoctor short and developing some original feature films.
The wonderful voice of SpongeBob, the one and only Tom Kenny will also be on hand at the Festival this year to help with some of the fun demonstrations.
Appearances are subject to change due to unforeseen professional or personal circumstances.
