Upcoming SY2023-2024 Updates

An oversight hearing at the Guam Congress Building revealed that with only three weeks left until the start of the new school year, only two out of 41 GDOE schools have passed sanitary inspection. Senators expressed disappointment that GDOE's approach to meeting inspection requirements has not materialized as promised. GDOE Deputy Superintendent Erika Cruz stated that the government had pledged to provide manpower to assist Public Health in conducting inspections, but this assistance did not materialize. As a result, Public Health is overwhelmed and has struggled to conduct inspections and issue variances. With time running out, GDOE and Public Health are urgently working to get schools ready for inspections, with efforts to seek support from various sources, including FEMA. The possibility of formally declaring a state of extreme urgency is being considered to leverage additional support from the administration.

For the time being, schools that are still pending a pass rating for the Public Health inspection should anticipate online instruction. Teachers start on Friday, August 4, 2023, and students begin on August 9, 2023, unless the Guam Education Board amends the current school calendar.
