Upcoming SY2023-2024 Updates

President Tim Fedenko and Vice-President Sanjay Sharma, PhD, met with Dr. Swanson, GDOE Superintendent, this week to discuss tentative plans for the upcoming school year. Here are the top four takeaways from that meeting:

  1. The school year will begin on time. If a school did not pass their Public Health inspections, the school will open with online instruction. This means that there will be NO FURLOUGHS. GFT recognizes that a significant number of our members prefer in-person teaching as it is the most effective way to support the educational progress of our students, particularly those at the elementary level.
  2. So far, six schools have been inspected. Public Health is scheduled to assess three more schools before the start of the school year. As of now, only one school passed its inspection. GDOE will have a gradual reopening of schools as they pass their inspections.
  3. Some schools will have to double session this school year. The campus for Simon Sanchez High School (SSHS) is anticipated to be ready by 2027. For the upcoming school year, SSHS will double session with John F. Kennedy High School. There is a possibility of more schools having to double session based on the amount of schools that pass their Public Health inspections.
  4. Contact your senators and express your concerns about the island's economy being affected by parents staying home to supervise their children attending online school. The Committee on Education, Public Safety and the Arts will conduct an oversight hearing on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 10:00 am at the Public Hearing Room in the Guam Congress Building on the following: Oversight hearing on Guam Department of Education: Public Law 37-4 Compliance Status. If you are interested in participating in the Public Hearing to provide testimony, please contact the Office of Senator Chris “Malafunkshun” Barnett via electronic mail at malafunkshun@guamlegislature.org or (671) 969-3586 for further guidance.
