Prepare for Opportunities by Constantly Elevating Your Life
It’s amazing to me how so many people sit back and wait for opportunities to come to them, yet when those opportunities arrive they’re not ready because they didn’t work on themselves.
That is why you must constantly work on yourself so that when opportunities come you can take advantage of them. In this piece, I want to help you prepare for opportunities by continually elevating your life.
He Wanted It Without Preparation
The other day I was talking to a college graduate. He told me, “Gene, I really want to get a job in the tech industry.” I asked him, “How many jobs are you applying for?”
He said, “I apply about once or twice a week.” I said, “Okay—let’s say you get an interview and they ask what certifications you’re pursuing or what skills you’re developing. What will you tell them?”
He asked, “What do you mean?” I said, “Think about it. If you haven’t had a job in months and you’re not working on yourself, why would they take a risk on you? If you’re not actively developing right now, they won’t feel comfortable hiring you.”
I told him, “You have to develop yourself so that when opportunities come, you can take advantage of them.”
Just like that college graduate: no matter who you are—whether you’re a recent graduate, someone moving from job to job, or someone chasing a dream—you must work on yourself every day.
Rather than taking a course, earning a certification, reading books, building a portfolio, etc., show that you’re committed to growth so someone else will take a chance on you.
Tips to Start Elevating Yourself
Get clear on the opportunities you desire.
Action: Write down 1–3 clear opportunity goals and, for each goal, write one daily action or task that will help you seize opportunities to realize that goal.
For example, if your goal is to get a job as a nutritionist, a daily task could be to read one article about nutrition or to study a module of a nutrition course.
Create a opportunity preparation tracker.
Action: Create a one-page checklist of all the tasks you do daily while preparing for a potential opportunity. Include the outcomes of those preparations so that, if someone asks what you have been doing, you can show the list and tangible results.
For example, when I was laid off in 2010 and hoping for a job in the wellness industry, I prepared to take advantage of opportunities by completing online courses, reading industry books, and working toward a personal training certification.
When I finally got an interview, I took a sheet showing what I had worked on during the seven months I was unemployed and presented the workouts I had created from in-home personal training sessions I ran while job-seeking. The interviewer was so impressed she hired me on the spot.
Opportunities will come into your life, but you must decide to prepare for them by constantly elevating yourself. So I encourage you to decide today that you will not let any opportunity pass you by due to a lack of preparation. because You Are WORTHY TO BE GREAT!
