We protect what we love

FRIDAY . 04 . 03. 22 .

Good morning folks!

We hope that all of our Queensland and NSW followers & Co. are staying safe and dry during this unprecedented weather event.

We encourage everyone to listen to local weather warnings and evacuation directions. With stories of loss and near misses emerging, the news (both local and international) has been exceptionally hard to watch over this past week.

This week's newsletter seeks to provide a sense of connection. For International Women's Day, we are hosting a "Women, Waves & Trails" event with our friends from Surfers for Climate. And for Clean Up Australia Day, some of the FWP crew are excited to be hosting some plogging events. Scroll down to learn a little more about how you can get involved.

WOMEN, WAVES AND TRAILS

Celebrating the women who work hard to preserve wild places

This #IWD, For Wild Places and Surfers for Climate are celebrating the beautiful natural spaces and the women that are working hard to preserve them with a series of community events on Wadawurrung Country.

Join us on Tuesday 8th March for "Women, Waves and Trails". The day will kick off at 7am for a surf at Urquhart’s Bluff. No board? No worries! -Our mates @surfingvictoria will have you covered.

This laid back beach session will be followed by a trail run and, just as those hunger cues are starting to kick in, our mates at @feedmesurfcoast will be providing some post-activity (free - please register) brekkie.

At 5:30pm we're kicking things off @oceangrind to hear from a range of local awesome women who are experienced in the environmental, social and sporting worlds. Tickets are $15 which includes a free @bellsbeachbrewing drink on arrival, and live music from @minkmila_. There will also be yummy meals from @feedmesurfcoast.

You can register for the free morning brekkie here, and/or purchase your $15 ticket for evening activities here.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

image

This year, some of the For Wild Places crew are excited to be hosting a couple of β€˜plogging’ (picking up rubbish while jogging) events for Clean Up Australia Day, on Sunday 6th March. With escalating concerns over the plastic waste crisis, plogging is a great way to help keep wild places free from the highly visible consequences of human consumption and the effects of a disposable society.

If you’re in the area, we’d love for you to come along and join us on the trails as we pick up rubbish, have a chat and throw out some high fives (or elbow taps) at the end. You can find out where FWP are hosting some events here. Maybe double check the night before/morning of, in case of some last-minute location changes due to flooding.

What to bring:

  • Please BYO gloves if you wish, and a bag to put your rubbish in. We will help you dispose of rubbish afterwards if you are unable to
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Clothes according to weather conditions, including comfy shoes
  • A reusable water bottle
  • Plenty of stoke!

If you're keen to learn more about the power of sports activism, and the history of Clean Up Australia Day, We Are Explorers have recently published an article titled "sports activism is gaining traction, here's how you can move with it" - so click on the link to check it out.

NEXT WEEK: SALOME TOBIN

Stay tuned for next week's newsletter, which will be brought to you by Salome Tobin. Salome just ran in the takayna trail run and has, so far, raised over $1700 for the Bob Brown Foundation - an epic effort.

We'll be doing a Q&A session that will give some insights into her relationship with the Tarkine, what it's like running through such an ancient forest and her time spend in the defenders camp. As someone who has been involved with the Bob Brown Foundation for quite a few years, we've also asked Salome to share changes that she's noticed in the campaign to protect the Tarkine and whether sports activism is an effective tool for change.

That's all from us this week folks. We hope everyone is staying safe in these unprecedented floods and checking in on family and friends.

And as always, thank you for taking the time for wild places.

Elanor & the For Wild Places team.
