We protect what we love
FRIDAY 31.03.2023.
Hello, I hope everyone has had a beautiful week and is planning something exciting for the weekend. For those tackling the steep ups and downs at Buffalo Stampede, have fun out there, and take it easy on the ankles! Or maybe you're heading to the long-awaited Wonderfalls in Lorne, after multiple postponements due to wet weather. If you are headed to Lorne and have a few hours up your sleeve on Saturday morning, maybe join us at our third TRACTION event at Sheoak Picnic Area? You'll find all the details at the end of the newsletter..
But without further ado, it's time to turn over to our new volunteer Sasha, who is hosting this week's newsletter!
Originally from Moscow but based in Sydney for the last 9 years, I am excited to be joining FWP as Finance Officer. And today, as you might have guessed, Iāll have an attempt at hosting the weekly newsletter!
For more than 4 years I have been working as a business manager in music. The chaotic nature of the industry and the fact that weāve had to deal with a global pandemic, devastating fires and floods as well as brutal inflation ā all this has taught me how to adapt to the financial needs of my clients quickly and help them make balanced decisions in given circumstances. These are the skills Iām hoping to add to the table to help FWP grow bigger and stronger this year.
The majestic Christ Redeemer (Rio) overlooking the whole city.
Although running has been in my life since I was a teenager, trail running is completely new to me. And because thereās nothing I love more than being in nature, I am excited to see the world through the eyes of the FWP community and discover parts of Australia that I havenāt seen before.
Hereās to an exciting new chapter together!
TRAVEL RECOMMENDATION
Before joining FWP in early March, I spent 3 weeks in Rio de Janeiro doing samba training and dancing at the carnival with one of the local samba schools. If you havenāt been to Rio before, then make sure to put it on your map as soon as possible. The natural beauty of this city and the explosive energy of the locals are nothing to be compared to. Music, food & drinks will fill you with joy. And complex social, political and environmental issues that youāll get exposed to will give you a lot of food for thought.
Beautiful bay at the foot of Christ the Redeemer.
WHAT I'M LISTENING TO
Although I have come back from Rio with a ton of old-school samba records, my recommendation today will be a new album by a contemporary Brazilian musician Rubel. You can listen to āAs Palavrasā here, and I guarantee that anyone that appreciates Latin American music will find something interesting.
WHAT I'M READING
Recently I have been thinking a lot about what it means to reshape your life and how I want my own life to look. Clearly, sports (and the discipline required) are in a way a portal into a new life. A good illustration of that is Rich Rollās book Finding Ultra. I highly recommend this book if you havenāt read it before (as well as Richās podcast episode with our own local running legend Nedd Brockmann).
That's all from us this week folks. This is a friendly reminder that our third TRACTION event will be happening tomorrow at Otways. You can RSVP below.
And as always, thank you for taking the time for wild places.
