We protect what we love

FRIDAY . 23 . 04 . 21 .

Hey there!

My name’s Elanor (Elle), and I’m absolutely stoked to be bringing you the newsletter over the next four weeks whilst Hilary is away adventuring around Lady Musgrave Island.

I’m the newest member of the For Wild Places team, so I thought I would take this opportunity to share a little bit about myself. In general, I’m a coffee enthusiast, trail running, AFL playing, high-energy human, with a passion for the great outdoors, sustainability and social impact.

I'm stoked to be part of the FWP team, and look forward to conflating my love of trail running, social impact and empowerment to help take care of this wonderful planet. If you keep scrolling down, I’ll introduce you to what I'm learning, doing, listening to and reading.

WHAT I'M DOING

AFL has recently become a huge part of my life.

of the 2021 season.

I play AFL for the Sydney University Women’s team (we are colloquially known as “The Bombers”). The increasing female participation and representation in this sport has seen the club thrive on solidarity and friendship. There is such a grounding sense of community within the club - everyone offers each other lifts to and from games/training sessions, we meet up at each other’s houses to watch games and socialise, and love going out together. Overall, it’s a great vibe.

WHAT I'M LISTENING TO

"BLISTER Podcast Network" founded by Jonathan Ellsworth.

There are so many reasons why I love tuning in to the Blister Podcast Network.

First, I love that the name unites so many people from different outdoor adventure sports and that we’re all connected by a very small pocket of bodily fluid

Second, the variety of topics is awesome. One week you can be inspired by FKT attempts, and the next week you can be learning about different types of ski bindings, the evolution of the camping industry, adventure photography, mountaineering or the science behind avalanche forecasting.

Finally, I’m inspired by the people who appear on the podcast. The most recent “Off the Couch” episode spoke with Daryl Murphy on his ‘Miles for Justice’ project that seeks establish community libraries in low-socioeconomic areas. This project demonstrates how two passions can collide to create positive social change. It’s stories like this that truly inspire me, and there are so many that are available in this podcast series.

WHAT I'M READING

"Why I'm no longer talking to white people about race" by Reni Eddo-Lodge.

image

To fight systemic and entrenched racism, we must first understand our place in it. Consequently, I take personal responsibility in educating myself, understanding and acknowledging my own white privilege. “Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race” by Reni Eddo-Lodge explains black history and how it has been eradicated by white people, helping to provide a contextual basis for today’s race relations. Although this book is based on British history, there are many lessons to be learnt. This book is confronting, and not one that I want to read in a day. I’m taking my time - I’m seriously pondering the personal and factual accounts in the book, and engage in my own self-reflection.

I highly recommend grabbing a copy from your local bookstore. You can read more about the book here.

THE REWILD RUN

image

The team at For Wild Places were stoked to announce our second event, The Rewild Run. This unique team event will take place at Mt Rothwell, a predator free sanctuary nestled behind the You Yangs in Victoria, where native Australian animals that are extinct in the wild roam free within the biodiverse rocky grasslands remnant woodlands, boosting population numbers and re-wilding once thought extinct species.

On Saturday 4th September 2021, get a group together and take your turn in tackling the 10km loop in teams of four, two or one, to complete the 41km route.

Pop the date in your diary and pre-register now to stay up to date with event information. For more information, check out the website or Facebook event. Along with our event partner Odonata, we are super excited to help continue the vital work of the team at Mt Rothwell.

We acknowledge the the First Nations people who have been custodians of land, waters and culture for tens of thousands of years. We pay respects to First Nations Elders past, present and emerging. This email was created on the lands of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation. I would also like to pay my respects to the Dharug and Gundungurra People of Ngurra Country - a beautiful place where I have spent some time this week.

Always was, always will be.
