Coaches Corner
To Open or not to Open…. That is the Question.
In my eyes, I think of us as much more than a CrossFit gym when I think about our mission, community and purpose. CrossFit is the style of functional fitness that we most closely align with, but we aren’t limited to that.
With that said, it is that time of year for the CrossFit open. Like many of you, the excuses and reasons why I could easily convince myself not to sign up for the “CrossFit Open” creep into my thought process all too often.
- “I’m not in competition shape after COVID, or the Holiday season”.
- “I don’t do CrossFit for the competition"
- "I have to scale some of the movements."
Whatever the excuse, legitimate or just a bonified excuse! I adhere to the idea that doing things out of your comfort zone makes you stronger, more Fortified if you will. The CrossFit open falls under that category.
Yes, the workouts are going to be uncomfortable. But now, I look forward to seeing how I stack up to my previous years scores and other people in my age group, in the state, country and around the world. I would encourage you to lean into the discomfort, you might learn something about yourself and what you are capable of.
During the Open, Fortified will be hosting Friday Night Lights each Friday (Feb 25, March 4 and March 11). It's going to be a fun string of events.
The coaching staff will throw down in the first heat starting at 5:30 pm followed by a heat every 30 minutes where participants who registered for the open can sign up for the heat time of their choice. Please sign up and participate, or if you are unable at least come support and cheer on those that are. We will have a tailgate environment going on in the parking lot and hope to make it a fun and entertaining event for everyone!

Anatomy Optimized
Hi! My name is Dr. Mac and I am a licensed Fellowship trained physiotherapist specializing in the treatment of the fitness athlete and unique orthopedic, neuropathic, and myofascial pain syndromes here at Anatomy Optimized.
Throughout the year I will be writing about various topics spanning CrossFit and exercise, nutrition and supplementation, simple self-rehabilitation strategies for orthopedic aches and pain, and existing changes seen in physical therapy healthcare practices.
Over time, the aim is to make readers more aware of current day topics that are relevant to both their individual selves and social community. I look forward to what our healthcare column will provide to our readers!
Did you know...
Anatomy Optimized offers a maintenance package to all gym members as an add on to your Fortified membership. For $150 per month you get 2 separate one hour sessions with one of our DPT’s to work on whatever ache, pain, injury, movement issues or musculoskeletal concern you may have.
Mom’s Minute
Hey guys! Nicolette here! Once a month I will be writing (or recruiting one of the fellow moms from the gym) to share ideas and tips about being a homemaker or helpful mom hacks. We all know life is busy. Between operating some of the behind-the-scenes activity for the gym, raising my sons, Ezra (3 years old) and Noah (7 months), managing the home, job and still trying to find time and energy to work out, it all can be a balancing act that many of us can relate to. I hope this column is an easy read that will be helpful for all the moms and inspirational to everyone in our community!
Fun fact about me
My favorite barbell movement is power cleans, my least favorite is thrusters!
Weigh Ankor
Hi everyone! I'm Ashley, you may have seen me around the gym with my tripod and camera filming my workouts. I'm going to be talking about my journey with CrossFit and food in these segments of the newsletter.
If you don't already know my story, I started CrossFit in May of 2020 at 309.7 pounds. It took me a year to lose 100 pounds and another seven months to lose the last 40. In December of 2021, I hit my goal weight of 169. I never thought it was possible but honestly CrossFit and focusing on my nutrition saved my life.
I hope that some of my stories in the coming months inspire or motivate you to keep going on your own health journey.

Pulse on the Valley from MAV Real Estate
As the pandemic trudges forward, the Arizona housing market had its best year on record in 2021, shattering every housing metric we saw in 2020 and then some. There were a few questions entering 2021, most notably, what would happen when the foreclosure and eviction moratoriums ended. Where many thought numbers would be high, 2021 reported the lowest foreclosure activity on record!
We have less than half the number of active listings than we had a year ago which is putting a lot of pressure and despair on buyers in this tough market. This time last year, this market was described as shocking with the lack of supply, and now we see even lower supplies than before.
While we have seen more new listings arrive during 2021 than during 2020, but only 1.4% more. The annual sales rate increased by 6%, so the extra supply proved thoroughly inadequate in the face of demand. Prices have accelerated due to the huge imbalance between supply and demand, yet we have only seen part of that reaction.
Sales prices are a trailing indicator and lag the leading indicators by up to 15 months. We can therefore expect to see prices move even higher during the next 12 to 15 months with appreciation rates possibly rising over 20%. The median sales price rose 28.23% between December 2020 and December 2021.
This is one of the biggest jumps year over year that we’ve seen. With interest rates on the rise, we will be watching the numbers closely to see where the market goes from here.
