Why do Australians hate their names?

Hi -
Apparently hating your own first name is a cultural phenomenon so widespread in Australia that it goes completely unremarked. Until a friend from another country points it out.
I named one of my kids after the Cyclone in which she was born. Do you think she's impressed that I gave her such an awesome 'fun fact' to introduce herself with? Nope.
Why on earth do Australians do such a bad job of naming their children? Conversely, why do Australians hate the perfectly good names that their parent took a fair bit of trouble over?
Can you shed some light on this mystery?
