Do you ever feel like just sharing some exciting news? It might be a little nerdy, but yes, we are excited. An entire e-mail dedicated to poo. It's a childhood dream come true. Our portfolio company Zero Carbon develops breakthrough small-scale waste-to-energy solutions!
During our recent Webinar with our CTO, Michael Hofmeister, he converted sewage sludge to power without any pelletizing or pre-processing. Why is that important, you might ask? Well, there is a lot of poo in the world, and it keeps coming. With Almost 8 Billion People, 1 Billion Cows, 677 Mil. Pigs, 26 Billion Chickens, there are massive problems and opportunities in this market.

The European Union, for example, has banned the disposal of sewage sludge on farmlands due to groundwater pollution and smell. Zero Carbon works in a German Government Funded project providing on-site solutions for the largest Waste Water Treatment company in Malaysia, Indah Water.
Currently, sewage is often pumped directly into rivers and oceans of transported to landfills. Both come with a massive environmental impact and cost.

Yup! This is where global livestock production is going! More and More animals- produce more poo!
In this interview, Michi gives a great explanation of why it is so hard to turn poo into energy. There is a lot of ash in the sewage sludge, which means there is not much energy and many minerals, which tend to turn into rock inside a high-temperature reactor. The Water content is super high, so you have to dry the fuel first. The Zero Carbon process extracts enough energy to dry the fuel, so you don't have to add electricity, gas, or oil (which is huge)!
