How is your experience pitching to investors? How has it changed in the online world? How different is the experience of crowd-funding over institutional investors?
For many tech CEO's presenting is torture; I get it. Watching someone who hates presenting mumble along for long periods can be torture as well. For me, pitching is what I love to do; initially a trained singer and actor, it is the only time on stage I get these days. The only thing I miss is the applause; it would be nice once in a while. Now the level in the US has improved a lot which Accelerators and Incubators training entrepreneurs in this vital skill. Ultimately if you cannot communicate your vision is clear and inspiring, how do you expect anyone to follow you.

Outside the US, the level can often still be improved with some pretty easy exercises; at EX Venture, we had an entire pitch training series with some of the leading VCs in the world, giving live feedback. The lack of travel during Covid made it a lot easier to get an opportunity to pitch your business idea to an extensive network of investors online. Sitting on the VC side made it a lot easier to tune out writing e-mails. As my old friend Steven Berkenfeld former Head of Private Equity at Barclays and Lehmann Brothers, pointed out," We at least use to take founders out to lunch, getting to know them if they came to New York. This all has changed. If the first impression is not professional and exciting, it becomes very tough to come back."

I enjoyed going back to our new Lockdown Studio, distilling everything about Zero Carbon into a 2 Min. video. It has been almost four years since my last public investment round; interesting to be back on the other side, to see Zero Carbon enter global markets finally. For over fifteen years, we have been working to disrupt the global waste industry and end up ocean waste by offering small-scale waste to energy systems using next-generation Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.
