2 days trapped in rubble…
3 years in a German Labour camp…
With events like those shaping your family lineage, it’s no wonder one of Expat Money’s most recent hires, Ryan Herche, is so deeply mission-aligned with everything we stand for here at Expat Money.
Ryan was born in California (where he met his wife), and today they have four children, with their fifth due in just under a month.
He and his growing family left the U.S. and secured permanent residency in Mexico about 3 years ago, as he didn’t want to remain tied to a country where he and his family could be ticketed for grocery shopping…
…which they literally were when they faced a police checkpoint that was stopping and inspecting every passing vehicle in their neighbourhood during the height of COVID.
Yes… ticketed for grocery shopping as a family…
…in the “land of the free”...
Ryan and his wife were strategic about the birth of their fourth child, which allowed them to secure near-immediate permanent residency for themselves so they would have the legal right to live, work and bank in Mexico.
Ryan is also very open about the fact that, given Mexico's trajectory, the growing push toward socialism, and security concerns, he is seriously considering Panama as the next place to build his family’s future.
Now… at just 40 years old, this is quite impressive, I think you’ll agree that this is quite impressive.
When I asked him where his aptitude for responsible family leadership comes from, he told me a couple of stories about his family history…
During World War I, Ryan’s great-grandfather was trapped under a collapsed trench for two days when a piece of ordnance exploded near him.
Wounded and trapped beneath the destruction of war, not knowing whether help would come, not knowing whether he would survive, and not knowing whether he would ever see his family again…
Later, during the Second World War, Ryan’s Grandfather was kidnapped from the docks of Marseille and forced to work for 3 years in a German labour camp until the frontline soldiers had advanced enough to free him.
Despite this, both men ultimately continued to call France home…
Ryan’s mother, however, wanted something different.
She was enamoured of what America represented and the opportunities it offered, and was determined to make it her home.
…and she did.
That decision changed the trajectory of Ryan’s family… and Ryan knows it.
He is barely 40 years old and is already thinking like a man who understands that his decisions today will shape the lives of his children and grandchildren decades from now.
That is exactly the kind of person I want around me and the kind I want to “build my house” with.
If you’re honest with yourself, you understand there is a lot outside your control…
…but if you’re courageous, you understand that there is a lot that is.
If you’re responsible for making courageous decisions for the next generation, I want you to understand something clearly:
You are not being dramatic.
You are not being paranoid.
You are doing what serious people have always done when the situation around them calls for meaningful action.
One day, your children or grandchildren may look back on the decisions you made and understand that their life is different because you had the courage to act before it was easy, popular, or obvious.
Though it started with his mother making the first major move, Ryan is smartly following suit, “playing his cards wisely” and making decisions that are going to serve himself and his loved ones for generations to come.
I encourage all of you reading this to deeply consider the choices made by those before you, as in most cases, those choices are what allowed you the freedom and opportunity to grow up and build your life and your wealth where you did.
Don’t let your family history be “history”.
Learn from it… and act accordingly.
Speak soon,
Mikkel
PS. Ryan was able to strategically leverage giving birth abroad to secure residency for his entire family in another country. If you want to learn more about how you can do the same, I encourage you to download this free report: Give Your Newborn a Passport More Powerful Than Yours… Starting on Day One, from my partners at My Birth Abroad.
PPS. Make sure to reserve your seat in the presentation room for this Saturday for my huge announcement regarding a massive project designed specifically with the Expat Money community in mind. Given the gravity of what I am going to be announcing, there is a good chance that we will reach max capacity. If you’re planning to attend (which I highly encourage you to do), don’t wait until the last minute, or you may miss out. Register now.
