Panama: Why I Chose This Small Latino Country As My Home Base

Sep 06, 2024 9:43 pm

“Why Panama?”

I get this question every day, especially in a world where the word “expat” is still often associated with countries like the UAE, Portugal, Singapore, and others.

It was not an easy decision, and it was not one my wife and I took lightly. When we decided to leave the UAE several years ago, we spent countless hours debating the pros and cons of several countries before deciding on Panama.

Since I get this question so often, I decided that this week, I would share with you a presentation I gave at last year’s Expat Money Summit, in which I lay out all the reasons we settled on Panama as our home base.

This will also help give you an idea of the flavour of some of the presentations you’ll hear at this year’s Summit. And don’t worry—I never do the same presentation twice, so you’ll get all new content at this year’s Expat Money Summit.

TODAY’S EPISODE:

  • Tune in to hear me first lay out the good, the bad and the ugly of the UAE and why we decided to search for another home country.
  • Listen in to hear about the most pleasant experience one could ever have losing a wallet when I lost mine in a taxi in the UAE.
  • Hear me compare the stark differences in both the cost and quality of food between the UAE and Panama.
  • Learn about Panama's very favourable tax situation, a big factor for many expats looking to protect their hard-earned wealth.
  • It’s not all about numbers. Discover all you need to know about the lifestyle in Panama and why it suits our family so well.
  • What about the visa options? Learn about Panama’s many residency options and which pathway we chose (an option that is, unfortunately, no longer available.)
  • Is Panama safe? Find out what it’s like living here, how the country respects the rule of law, and whether you can legally own a gun here.
  • Lastly, you’ll hear what it’s been like living in Panama City and why this Latin American metropolis has become such a hub for expats.
