[4 min read] The devil you know is a lemon, hot sleeper's dream & aussie fish scene

👋 Hey. Welcome to issue #167 of The Everyday Athlete Newsletter.

Here are my 3 favourite ideas, learns and resources to help you improve your performance this week (4 min read):

😈 This is why you can’t hang onto your fitness progress

Better the devil you know, right?

The idea goes: a known, but bad, situation beats a potentially worse, but unknown, one.

And whether we consciously agree with this or not.

Our safety-seeking nervous system agrees with it.

And it’s exactly why you can make noticeable progress with your fitness..

But can’t hang onto it long term.

Because we all have an internal thermostat for our health.

A subconscious set point for how strong, fit, energised or in control we believe we’re meant to feel.

When things drop below that baseline?

We take action. We dial things in.

But when things get too good?

We subconsciously pull back.

Because our nervous system is wired for what’s familiar.

And familiar doesn’t always mean better.

Often it means struggle. Effort. Earning it.

And until that shifts, no progress will stick for long.

So better the devil you know? No, f* that.

This is exactly what my Lean & Lively 21-day sprint is built to change.

It’s not just a training and food reset.

It’s a nervous system recalibration.

A short, sharp container to help you raise your baseline.

And finally feel at home in a body that feels good.

If you’re ready to stop slipping back to baseline, I’d love to have you on board.

🛌 A hot sleeper's dream

One of the best changes we've made to our sleep environment recently is getting bamboo sheets.

They're cool to the touch. Built to suck up sweat. And just delicious on the skin.

The brand we got em from Ecoy is running a 50% off black friday sale.

Can suss that here if you're interested.

🐟 The Aussie fish sh*t show (and how to navigate it)

Good fish is really good.

GoodFish - an independent guide to the sustainability of seafood found at Aussie fishmongers, supermarkets, fish and chip shops and restaurants - is also really good.

Because the:

...is a bit of a sh*t show (ahem, Tassie salmon).

So it's worth looking through and getting a better understanding of what's the good stuff (and what's the not-so-good stuff).

Cause there's not much better than a salty fish and chips for dinner, perched up on a grassy knoll somewhere watching the sunset. My word...

Even better when you know it's not some farmed junk pumped with antibiotics that cooked up our oceans to arrive on the plate.

Check out the Goodfish Guide here.

My learn: seems our best bet is eating local, wild-caught fish.

(thank you to WG for the insights)

If curious, here's how we can work together:

That's it!

Have a great weekend 🤙
