👗 Essential Style Tip of the Month
Practical advice for everyday Style Confidence!
Cool, Confident and Sleeveless!
There's no age limit on sleeveless tops-or on choosing a little more coverage when it feels right. Sun exposure, changing skin texture, and natural shifts in our bodies can make us more aware of our upper arms, but that doesn't mean summer style has to default to long sleeves.
The right details make a remarkable difference. Look for tops with high, shallow armholes that sit close to the body without gaping; they provide more coverage around the underarm and keep bra sides discreet. A wider shoulder strap offers balance and coverage, while a boatneck, crew neck, or mock neck draws the eye upward toward the face. Fabrics with some structure-crisp cotton, breathable linen, or fluid silk-skim the body rather than cling.
For a flattering in-between option, try a cap sleeve or a softly slanted short sleeve. Both create a visual line across the upper arm that can make it appear slimmer, while offering welcome relief from the heat. They're an excellent alternative when neither sleeveless nor a full-length sleeve feels quite right. Here are some nice options from Talbots and Laura.
Shorts-It's all about the fit
Can women of every age wear shorts? Absolutely!
The key is finding a pair that feels comfortable and flatters your body.
Start with the basics: a mid- or high-rise waist, an inseam that gives you the coverage you prefer, and fabric that moves with you. For many women, a 7-to-10-inch inseam hits the sweet spot, but the best length is the one that feels right for your height and body. I find that shorts with a leg wide enough to fall in a straight line from the hip create a smooth, balanced silhouette-especially if you have curvier hips. Personally, I prefer shorts that fall just above the knee, or an inch or two higher.
Bermuda shorts are an easy, versatile choice for everyday wear. Chino styles add polish, while linen keeps things cool on hot days. Denim shorts look fresh and classic in a clean dark or medium wash, and pull-on knit styles are ideal when comfort is the priority. Here are some great shorts from Talbots and Northern Reflections.
